The U.S. Green Building Council - Chicago Chapter, University of Illinois at Chicago Urban Planning & Policy Student Association, and the University of Illinois at Chicago Real Estate Group have partnered to bring a program on LEED for Neighborhood Development to the University of Illinois at Chicago campus.

The LEED for Neighborhood Development (LEED ND) Rating System integrates the principles of smart growth, urbanism, and green building into the first national system for neighborhood design. LEED certification provides independent, third-party verification that a development’s location and design meet accepted high levels of environmentally responsible, sustainable development.

In keeping with the intention and goals of the LEED ND program, the City of Chicago has decided to apply the principles to a large portion of the South Chicago community area. The South Chicago LEED ND initiative is 1 of the 238 pilot projects in this new program. This long term initiative will address the comprehensive redevelopment of an area of the city that has suffered a great deal of disinvestment due to the decline of the steel industry. This community will redevelop in as a sustainable and healthy community which will build on the existing assets and focus on sustainability in all its forms.

Speaker:
Marilyn Engwall has worked for the City of Chicago’s Department of Planning and Development, now the City’s Department of Community Development, since 1993. Her professional experience includes neighborhood commercial development, community development planning, and industrial redevelopment projects. She is currently responsible for redevelopment initiatives for a 30 square mile area of the city. Marilyn has initiated and is currently managing the designation of the 1140 acre South Chicago LEED Neighborhood Development (LEED ND) initiative plan which will be the City of Chicago’s guide for sustainable redevelopment in this south side community for the next 25 years.

Marilyn holds a Master of Urban Planning and Policy and Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
